Nagnath Paar

I have been seeing the idols of Lord Ganapati (also popular as the elephant-headed lord or Ganesh - the son of Shiva and Parvati). He is arguably one of the most popular Hindu gods in the word, atleast i would like to think so. I have seen his love transcend languages, castes, economic-status slabs.

One such event is the Ganapati festival that is held in the city of Pune (India) every year. Its traditional nature, beautiful idols, rich decorations and the grandeur attracts visitors from all around the country and the world. However, i have been missing attending this festival for several years in a row now.

Thankfully, this year soumitra911 was nice enough to post some excellent photos on Flickr. I thoroughly enjoyed going through them. You can see the whole set here.

The picture featured here is the "Nagnath Paar" Ganesh idol (Nagnath Paar is the name of a place in the heart of Pune city where this idol is kept). I chose this one because i particularly like HIS eyes. The godesses next to him are known as "Gauri"'s and it is traditional to worship them at the same him as HIM.
